Our philosophy here at Smitten is that the customer has the right to know exactly what they are using on their skin. For this reason we created this page to help inform you and give you some basic knowledge of the ingredients that we use in our products. We use only high quality ingredients, purchased fresh and often from reliable sellers as well as locally when possible. We have nothing to hide and want to showcase our ingredients to you. Here are some of the most commonly used oils and butters, as well as a few additives. You can find more information regarding specific ingredients used in each bar on the page for the soap.
Avocado oil: Highly conditioning oil when used in soap or leave in products. High in vitamins A, D, E and deeply penetrates into your skin. Naturally increases collagen production which makes it ideal for dry or mature skin. Avocado is a base oil in our soaps.
Castor oil: A natural humectant and emollient and helps produce a conditioning lather in soap. Contains ricinoleic acid which helps calm and soothe dry and irritated skin. Castor is a base oil in all our soaps.
Cocoa butter: At Smitten we use all natural unrefined cocoa butter. Unrefined cocoa butter contains all the natural vitamins and benefits the butter provides. It naturally has a strong, rich chocolate scent that it lends to leave on products. High in antioxidants and help reduce skin stress and signs of ageing. Cocoa butter is used in many of our products. A base oil in our soaps, Lip balms, lotion bars.
Coconut oil: Used in soap due to its natural cleansing power and contributes to lather and bar hardness. When used in leave on products coconut oil is a dry oil that rapidly soaks in and provides transdermal absorption of other active ingredients . Many of the skin benefits are due to its unique and high content of Lauric, Capric and Caprylic acid. Coconut is used as a base oil in almost all our soaps.
Jojoba oil: Although called oil this is actually a wax and most closely resembles skin sebum. Helps balance oil production which makes it great for troubled skin and for dry, damaged hair and scalp. High in natural vitamin E which can help soothe and calm irritated skin. Jojoba is also fantastic for your hair and scalp and can help control frizz. We use this in our Body Glaze, Lip Butter and in high amounts in our Beard oils.
Olive oil: When used in soap it makes for a hard bar with creamy conditioning lather. Great for sensitive or dry skin due to its high content of the antioxidant Hydryoxytyrosol which makes olive oil great for calming skin irritations. The antioxidants that are in olive oil make it hydrophilic and so it acts as a moisture barrier trapping moisture in. Olive is one of the base oils in our soaps.
Rice Bran Oil: High in vitamin E and is great for dry and mature skin. Rice bran oil contains ferulic acid and esters that help stimulate hair growth and help prevent aging skin. High in antioxidants like omega 3 and omega 6 it is great for nourishing your hair and skin. High in gamma-oryzanol which helps aid your skin by reducing inflammation and soothe discomforts.
Sesame oil: A lightweight dry oil that when used in leave on products soaks in rapidly leaving the skin velvety smooth. Contains vitamins E, K, B6 and several minerals. Contains antioxidant sesamol which is believed to slow down ageing, reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Helps calm and soothe skin irritations. This is used in high amounts in our Body Glaze.
Shea butter: We use refined shea butter in our lip balms which is white with no odor or color and still provides the moisturizing benefits. Shea butter is a fabulous moisturizer and barrier but also a great skin healer, is high in vitamin A, E and F. Helps to increase collagen and help premature wrinkles, hydrate hair and skin, provide moisture barrier, soothe sunburn and insect bites, helps overall appearance of scars and stretch marks and calms skin irritations.
Beeswax: We use only fresh beeswax straight from a beekeeper! Helps provide a protective barrier to hold moisture in while still allowing the skin to breathe. When blended with oils and butters it is a natural emollient and humectant to the skin drawing in moisture and sealing it in. Contains natural vitamin A which helps soften and rehydrate the skin.
Emu Oil: While this is a animal product Emu oil is not comedogenic and can be used straight on the face. Provides excellent penetration of transdermal layer which increases the potency of other therapeutic properties. Provides moisture and keeps skin supple while reducing inflammation and improving the appearance of fine lines. Emu oil is used in all our Lip balms for its moisturizing.
Australian Red Clay: Provides a natural deep red color to products. Very high content of iron and other essential minerals which help replenish and regenerate which helps create soft and glowing skin
Midnight Black Clay: Provides a natural black color to products. Can be used to make natural mineral makeup including eyeliner and mascara. Contains high amount of iron and other essential minerals.
French Green Clay: Provides a natural green color. Comes from the sedimentation of silico-aluminum which contains natural oxides and provides the green color. The high mineral makeup includes iron, silica, aluminum, magnesium, calcium, titanium, sodium and potassium. Absorbs and removes impurities from the skin and helps to stimulate blood flow to help create a healthy glow.
French Pink Clay: Provides a natural pink color. Contains a combination of red and white clays including Kaolinite, iron, illite, montmorillonite and calcite and is considered to be the mildest of all the clays. Perfect for normal, sensitive and mature skin. Helps to cleanse and detoxify the skin, exfoliate and help refresh your appearance.
French Yellow Clay: Provides a natural yellow color. Made up of fine mineral particles and iron oxide which provides the color. A Very mild clay that is great for dry or sensitive skin. Minerals within the clay helps exfoliate leaving skin smooth and fresh.
Tussah silk: Our silk is 100% cruelty free. Tussah silk is a protein produced by the silkworm. We add silk to every bar of soap we make which provides a luxurious rich feel.
